ABSTRACT WITHDRAWN

In May of 2009 the Final Record of Decision Declaration for the Omaha Pb Site (OLS) stated that any residential soil exceeding the preliminary remediation goal (400 mgPb kg-1soil) would be excavated, backfilled and revegetated.  The remedial action entailed excavating soils where the lead (Pb) concentration exceeded 400 mg kg-1 in the top 12 inches or 1200 mg kg-1 at depths greater than 1 ft.  After excavation clean soil was backfilled into the excavated areas to the original grade and a grass lawn was restored.  Currently there is concern that routine excavation practices would result in surface soil lead concentrations exceeding the preliminary remediation goal.  The goal of the proposed study was to investigate the redistribution of Pb in remediated residential surface soils after typical homeowner earth-disturbing activities.  The current study evaluated lead redistribution at 40 residential properties utilizing two different excavation techniques, earthen drill and shovel.
