Growers adopt more robust varieties that perform better in their fields along with employing improved agronomic practices to increase productivity on their acres. Field testing during product development is necessary to assess product performance for yield, grain quality and other important agronomic characteristics. Grain yield is challenging to dissect as it is determined by a complex network of interactions of physiological, genetic, abiotic and biotic factors. Variation in yield performance among locations is expected and likely due to the combined effects of differences among locations in soil type, rainfall, planting date, planting density, fertilization rate, insect and weed control and other factors. Various statistical approaches have been developed for summarizing data that elucidate product. Selecting products with these tools enables the characterization of products, resulting in the commercialization of products that enable farmers to have the opportunity to reach the yield potential of the crops genetics, environment and management system.
