In-line near infrared spectroscopy has made it possible to monitor the various quality attributes of grain directly in a process stream. The objective of this study was to determine how well this technology could determine the protein and oil contents of grain by direct contact of the sensor head with the grain stream. Analytical test results were estimated using the NIR spectra as regression estimators. Cross validation results confirm the ability of this technology to accurately predict grain protein concentration of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and oil concentration of oilseed (Brassica napus L.). This creates opportunities for use as a rapid screening tool on combine harvesters thereby enhancing crop breeding efforts.
