The Cuyahoga River, once so contaminated in Cleveland Harbor that it caught on fire, was recently the subject of investigation for beneficial use of dredged sediments from a portion of the federal navigation channel maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Sediments were collected at eight sampling stations along a 1.1 mile section of the channel and composited into two management units based on grain size. Background soils were also collected and evaluated along with the with river sediment composites. Testing was conducted to determine both the physical and environmental suitability of the sediment for beneficial upland uses including habitat development/restoration, recreational development, brownfield reclamation and industrial development. Both chemical and biological tests were performed following federal and state guidance to determine uses protective of environment and human health. Results will be presented.
