Session Description: Invited speakers at this symposium will teach the basic principles of water capture and evapotranspiration in semi-arid, dryland agroecosystems. The goal of this review of basic hydrology is to stimulate ideas and discussion about novel approaches to improve precipitation use efficiency. Topics will include soil and plant water relationships, including the basic principles behind crop water production functions. Those attending the workshop will be encouraged to participate in discussions with the goal of identifying current and future management that will improve crop water productivity.
