Split Nitrogen Application in Oilseed Flax Production.

In the province of Quebec (Canada), oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) production is limited and there is no crop management recommendations for Quebec growing conditions. During the last two years, the application of 4 nitrogen rates (0, 15, 30, 45 kg ha-1), either as a single or split application, were evaluated to determine their effects on grain yield. In 2003, grain yield decreased with nitrogen application rate. Grain yields were higher when nitrogen application rate was 0 or 15 kg ha-1 compared to 30 or 45 kg ha-1 . Nitrogen fertilization did not affect grain yield in 2004. For both years, a single or a split application of nitrogen resulted in similar grain yields. Cold and wet conditions prevailing in some areas in Northern Quebec could be beneficial for oilseed flax production and high nitrogen application rates had no beneficial effects on grain yields.
