Evaluation of Alternative Buffers to the Smp for Lime Recommendations in Wisconsin.

Carrie A.M. Laboski, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Soil Science, 1525 Observatory Dr., Madison, WI 53706 and John Peters, University of Wisconsin, Soil and Forage Analysis Lab., 8396 Yellowstone Dr., Marshfield, WI 54449.

In Wisconsin lime recommendations are based on soil pH, organic matter and SMP buffer pH. The SMP buffer pH does not contribute significantly to the lime recommendation for a soil. Additionally, the SMP buffer contains potassium chromate which poses a health risk to laboratory technicians and creates a problem for waste disposal. For these two reasons, alternate buffers were evaluated to improve the lime recommendation and increase safety.
