Pressure Measurements at Spatially Abrupt Infiltration Fronts.

Many infiltrating water fronts are abrupt spatially and are unable to be described by the Richards equation or other continuum models. One of the characteristics of these infiltrations is saturation overshoot when the water content profile is reversed with higher water contents at the front and lower water contents behind the front. Previous experimental studies consisted of measurements of water content behind the infiltrating front as a function of flux and initial water content, and these studies showed the range of the anomalous behavior. Here we report measurements of the water pressure for the same range of fluxes and initial water contents. We find that the water pressure profile is inverted whenever overshoot occurs and in some cases when overshoot is not observed. The water pressure at the front also varies with initial water content. We discuss how these results compare to possible soil physical models dealing with sharp infiltrating fronts.
