This is a project supported by USAID WINNER’s program to help the Republic of Haiti for the development and implementation of the watershed initiatives in national natural environmental resources. The major goal is to improve the livelihood of Haitian population by reducing threats of starvation, lack of nutrition, and poverty via improving agricultural outputs. To understand the soil fertility background, over 1,200 soil samples were collected from four major watersheds throughout the entire country of Haiti. Understanding soil analysis data can help people to manipulate fertilizer formula, manage nutrients wisely for various soils and crops to optimize the yield production based on soil fertility and crop requirements. For instance, the chemical analysis results showed that soil nitrogen and phosphorous are major limit and potassium content in most soil samples is sufficient. However, the fertilizer formula in Haiti is exclusively 12-12-20 (N-P2O5-K2O), which needs to be updated based on field experiments with nutrient calibrations and fertilizer demonstrations.
