ABSTRACT WITHDRAWN

Designing conservation practices is always easier in theory than it is in practice.  On real farms, farmers are faced with a range of social, ecological and economic constraints that limit what they can actually practice.  In the short term, working with farmers in a community with a deeper appreciation for the challenges and opportunities that they face in their own neighborhoods, as well as in the global marketplace can go a long way toward reaching modest goals.  In the longer term, we need to address systemic problems with farmers and assist them in researching and redesigning farming systems that can achieve production and conservation goals in light of increased energy costs, more unstable climates, and other future challenges.
