Wetness-related redoximorphic features are largely color-based and develop over long periods of time to reflect the internal hydrology during the period of development.  Some features such as reduced matrix can change in short time periods.  To investigate the transient nature of redoximorphic features such as the reduced matrix, three sites of a poorly drained soil (Routon Series) were observed for seasonal variation in hydrology, redox potential, and corresponding redoximorphic features using wells, IRIS tubes and α,α-dipyridyl.  Results demonstrated that redoximorphic features and related hydric indicators can vary seasonally.  The gleyed matrix (F2) hydric indicator was observed to be transient indicating that the date of observation can be significant in observing redoximorphic features and hydric indicators.
