  • Optimum use of nitrogen (N) is a key component in improving wheat grain yield and quality. The combined effect of other nutrients with N can have a positive impact on crop production.  Use of sulfur (S) and chloride (Cl) with N is considered to be effective in optimizing wheat grain yield and grain protein. Two field experiments were conducted to determine whether the application of the different rates of foliar N and S in addition to Cl at pre- anthesis could have a synergistic influence on winter wheat grain yield and quality. Two N rates, 10 and 20 kg N ha-1, in the form of N-SURE containing urea triazone (28-0-0) and UAN (28-0-0) will be foliar applied. Treatments will also include foliar application of Ammonium sulfate (6 kg S ha-1) at Feekes 10.1 growth stage. Calcium chloride will be applied to 4 plots of each rep and half of rep 4 at a rate of 10 kg Cl ha-1.  Normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) readings will be collected at Feekes growth stages 5, 7, and 10 from all plots.  Results should show that pre-anthesis foliar applied S and Cl in addition to N fertilization increases wheat grain yield and grain protein concentration.
