The EU-Framework 7-project Carbo-Extreme aims to elaborate a Pan-European synthesis of effects of the terrestrial carbon cycle under climate variability and extremes. This talk will provide an overview of effects of the European heatwave of 2003 on the carbon cycle, highlight emerging insights from detailed process studies on drought effects on ecosystem carbon dynamics and give an outlook on data assimilation based modelling of larger scale impacts of climate variability and extreme events.
