The goal for Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT) is to develop a network of individuals at Purdue University who are committed to transforming their courses.  This is accomplished by integrating a more student-centered approach that is based on research and aimed at enhancing student learning and retention.  IMPACT involves the redesign of classes and learning spaces.  The Introduction to Environmental Science and Soil Science courses in the Agronomy Department at Purdue University currently provide in-class exercises and a Soil Resource Center.  The Soil Resource Center (open 40 hours per week) utilizes a multitude of computer directed activities, individual tutoring, collaborative projects, and interactive lectures and discussions.  These two courses already incorporate many of the components of the IMPACT program.  The goal is to further expand the student-centered approach to instruction by redesigning the classroom to facilitate interactive learning.  This presentation will focus on the active learning environment in the Soil Resource Center and also teaching Environmental Science in a redesigned classroom space to facilitate team work and problem solving.
