Our goal is to create an outreach project to help reduce misconceptions the public may have about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). We did not want to argue nor persuade people to like GMOs but to simply give them the facts. We prepared posters, a pamphlet, and educational materials to share with various audiences. We focused on six objectives that covered the basics about GMOs. Basic definitions of terminology relating to GMOs were prepared and distributed. We discussed the general processes of how GMOs are made and why they are used. People have misconceptions about GMO safety, so we discussed regulatory processes that monitor the safety of GMOs. Additionally, we provided a list of common crops that utilize GMOs. The pros and cons of GMOs were presented to maintain neutrality. Finally, the future possibilities of GMOs were discussed. These materials have already been used at a Purdue campus-wide Ag awareness event. These materials will be available for public distribution, and our hope is to eliminate prejudice on a tool that could help feed the world.
