U.S. production has not kept pace with domestic consumer demand for canola oil. More than 80% of canola oil consumed in the country is imported from Canada. With the advent of winter canola cultivars that are adapted to southeastern climate and increased awareness of the high economic return from growing this crop, several farmers in Alabama have ventured into canola production. Although there is a continuous increase in canola acreage in the last few years in the state, there are yet several challenges that local farmers face. This paper reports on the status of winter canola production in Alabama and neighboring states.
