Annual wheat production area in the United States is approximately 53 million acres, with spring wheat comprising approximately 23% of these acres.  All of these wheat acres are exposed to autumn and early spring rainfall which can result in leaching of nitrogen out of the root zone as well as losses due to denitrification to nitrous oxides, ultimately leading to reduced nitrogen utilization and reduced yield potential.  Since 2012, Dow AgroSciences has established field research trials to characterize the agronomic and yield benefits of Instinct® II, a nitrapyrin CS formulation, throughout the key wheat growing regions of the northern US.  In these trials, Instinct II was evaluated in combination with various nitrogen application rates, production practices and fertilizer sources.  The results from these trials demonstrate that Instinct II has a positive impact on wheat yield without negative effects on protein content.  Instinct II was also shown to increase the amount and duration of NH4+ retention in the root zone as compared to the non-stabilized fertilizer treatments.
