The USDA NRCS Soil Survey program is undertaking two high priority tasks across eastern U.S. landscapes: (1) soil change inventory of dynamic soil properties (DSPs) effected by natural and management induced disturbance, and (2) accelerated development of Ecological Sites and Descriptions (ESDs). Soil change monitoring of DSPs on Ecological Sites and their States/Phases, has been implemented in western range and forest lands to aid in land management decision making. However, across the northern Appalachians, spatially and temporally complex historic and current landscape change presents significant, and maybe unique, challenges for deployment of State and Transition Models, perhaps unlike those encountered in the Western U.S. I provide several examples of these challenges.
