California is known for diverse geography, climate, soils, and hydrology. Viewed from space this diversity provides a good platform to explain some of the current challenges related to long-term drought. Anthropogenic changes to this environment over time are evident when compared to maps of California from 150 years ago. The original hydrology, although altered in many places, still has significant impacts on farms, cities, and more natural areas such as deserts, wetlands, and savannas.
