154 Teaching Soils Outside in a Digital Age
Oral Session
SSSA Division: Soil Education and OutreachWe are in a digital age of computers and smartphones and tablets, of the internet and online courses and social media, all just under our thumbs 24/7. But soil itself is not a digital medium. How do we get students interacting directly with real soils in the ground and the landscapes all around them? The only way is to actually go outside with students, and in spite of all the challenges and disincentives, many instructors do just that. Some instructors use digital interactives while in the field to enhance the experience and connection between on-the-ground observations and extant data. Others see outdoor exercises as an opportunity to set aside electronics and encourage students to take some time to experience a world without virtual components. This session will focus on why and how many instructors teach soils outside. The goal is to address the importance of teaching and learning about soils outside and to share successful experiences doing so, with and without digital technology.
