Abstract:
This presentation will address various funding resources available for cover crop research, including cover crop breeding.  Both USDA and foundation funding resources will be addressed, including new initiatives that have been proposed.  Given the focus of the session on cover crop breeding, a particular emphasis will be placed on developing partnerships and garnering funds to identify appropriate germplasm for improved cover crop traits, scale up seed supplies, field evaluate material, and move towards release of improved varieties.  Discussion will include the role of the NRCS Plant Materials Centers working with the ARS National Plant Germplasm System and various university, NGO and private sector partners.  Connections to new and existing soil health efforts through government, industry and other partnership activities will be highlighted for their potential to support cover crop improvement.  Also, the role of farmer participatory research through on-farm trials, such as the types of project frequently supported by the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, will be reviewed.
