Genetic information on combining ability and the type of gene action that governs the inheritance of economically important quantitative characters can be helpful to breeders. Such information can assist the plant breeders in selection of suitable parents and the appropriate breeding procedures. Therefore, a 10 x 10 diallel analysis of combining ability of oligosaccharides (raffinose and stachyose) in vegetable soybean [Glycine max L. (Merr.)] was conducted. The objectives of this study were to obtain information on the inheritance of seed traits and to identify suitable parents for cultivar development. This study showed that estimates of both the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA), and reciprocal variances were significant for seed (raffinose and stachyose) traits studied. In both F2 and F3 analysis the GCA/SCA ratios for raffinose were high. These values indicated the predominant role of additive genetic variance in the inheritance of raffinose. The performance of the parents for the seed traits studied were highly associated with their general combining ability effects.
