Wastewaters are often laden with dissolved salts, metals and other compounds which cannot be disposed of through conventional septic or municipal water treatment systems. Few studies have directly tested the capacity perennial vegetation has to assimilate more than moderate amounts of Sodium and Calcium chlorides. Some anecdotal evidence suggests the potential of switchgrass to be tolerant of softener brine. If proven true this may alow for its use as a ground cover and biomass generator in a brine application system.
