Little is known of the morphological response of chicory roots to low phosphorus under soil grown conditions. We planted three chicory cultivars in two different soils at 3 and 4 levels of phosphorus. Previous research with hydroponics suggests that these cultivars differ in morphological response to low phosphorus. This research confirms those patterns and extends the concept to related soils with significantly different Phosphorus withholding capacities. The results of this research will be presented and the implications discussed. Preview: Scientists can not generalize their research outcomes by species or soil type, and hydroponics provides a more generalized view of potential responses in soils.
