To evaluate the uptake and release characteristics of nutrients from aquatic ponds constructed under different compost application for lotus cultivation, the experiment was consisted of a lotus pond with compost application (site I) and a lotus pond without compost application (site II) in Lake Juam, Korea. The maximum amount of TN uptake by lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) in site I (with compost application) and II (without compost application) were 56.3 and 32.1 g m-2, respectively. The maximum amount of TP uptake by lotus in site I and II were 12.1 and 5.7 g m-2, respectively. The amount of COD, TN and TP release from soil in site I was higher than that in site II. In the case of COD balance, the total amount of COD inflow from agricultural water and rainfall in site I and II during the growing period were 157.44 and 6.69 kg 10a-1, respectively. The total amount of COD release from site I and II were about 31.10 and 13.46 kg 10a-1, respectively. In the case of TN balance, the total amount of TN inflow from agricultural water and rainfall in site I and II during the growing period were 7.23 and 3.43 kg 10a-1, respectively. In site I and II, the total amount of TN uptake by lotus were 56.27 and 32.07 kg 10a-1, respectively. The total amount of TN release from site I and II were about 1.39 and 1.13 kg 10a-1, respectively. In the case of TP balance, the total amount of TP inflow from agricultural water and rainfall in site I and II during the growing period were 8.08 and 0.19 kg 10a-1, respectively. In site I and II, the total amount of TP uptake by lotus were 12.20 and 5.72 kg 10a-1, respectively. The amount of TP release from site I and II were about 1.01 and 0.66 kg 10a-1, respectively.
