Although the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) has a wide range of hosts, grasses are preferred.  In the winter of 2006 in Ponce, PR 11 maize populations were scored for fall armyworm leaf and tassel damage.  Natural infestations were the source of insect pressure.  The intention is to detect QTL that confer resistance to this widespread pest.
