Declining water levels in the Ogallala aquifer is limiting the amount of water available for growing traditional water demanding crops. One approach is to grow traditional crops, which are vital for the sustainability of the local dairy industry, on part of the land holding and use remaining area for growing short duration crops those needs less water and are more water use efficient. A two location two year study was conducted to assess the potential of short duration oilseeds, pulses and cereals for the region. Crops like spring canola which can produce feedstock for the under construction biodiesel plant and the canola meal can be used by the dairy industry, offer lots of promise in the region. Yield data from all site years will be presented.
