  A phosphorus fractionation method and 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (31PNMR) spectroscopy was utilized to identify the transformation of organic phosphorus (P) forms in a forest soil subjected to thinning and burning treatments. Iron bound P was extracted using bicarbonate/dithionite solution.  Organic P and polyphosphates bound to Al was extracted using 0.1M sodium hydroxide. Humic acid bound P was separated by acidification of the sodium hydroxide extract. 31P NMR studies indicate the dominant organic P forms in the extracts are monoester-P followed by diester-P. Variations were observed in ratios of phosphate monoester and diester-P in soils subjected to logging and burning treatments.
