Ray Allmaras was a mentor and encourager for many younger scientists.  I am thankful that I was one of that group.  In this presentation, I will recount a few of the conversations between Ray and I to illustrate the scope, depth, and style of his influence upon younger scientists.  I will share some of the things Ray tried to teach me about statistics, soil, and art.  I will share a sampling of key notes, articles, and books either written by Ray or given to me by Ray, and discuss how these items are shaping my understanding of soil science and what it means to be a successful soil scientist.
