The objective of this study was to evaluate growth and development parameters of 30 common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) genotypes represented the genetic base of natural flora, national and international germplasm resources. The genotypes were evaluated in a completely randomized block design with three replications in a two years field study, 2007 and 2008. Natural plant height, main stem length, days to flowering, the number of branches on main stem, the number of leaves, the number of leaflets, stem thickness, and days to physiological maturation parameters were measured. Results showed significant differences among genotypes for all the parameters measured. Genotype x year interaction effects were not significant for the number of branches on main stem, stem thickness and the number of leaflets, indicating that these traits are quite stable across years. This study revealed that some genotypes used in this study have superior plant characteristics and these genotypes can be used in future common vetch breeding programs.
Key words: Vetch, Vicia, physiological maturity, natural plant height, growth and development.
