In irrigated corn production in Nebraska, water management influences nitrogen use efficiency, since any over-irrigation will potentially leach nitrogen, creating conditions where corn could become  nitrogen deficient. Therefore, N recommendations that are developed under irrigated conditions need to be developed using the same water management regime as the producers who will be using them.  As water management improves, the potential for improved N efficiency increases as well. This paper will look at the historical development of Nitrogen-Water Management Demonstrations that have brought nitrogen and irrigation management BMPs to farmer’s fields away from agricultural research facilities.  Control of water on these demonstrations has improved from no control to the ability to create randomized and replicated water regimes under a center pivot. New technologies have demonstrated how improvements in nitrogen and irrigation management bring increased value when used together.
