Dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L) are a rich dietary source of the zinc, an essential micronutrient.  Understanding genes involved in zinc movement to the seed will allow genetic gains in moving more zinc to the seed.  Three bean varieties with different seed zinc levels and different susceptibility to low zinc fertilization were greenhouse grown under normal and low zinc fertilizer.  Developing pods from each of these lines were harvested at 12-14 days after flowering.  RNA was extracted and sequenced from each treatment/variety combination.  Differences in expression of genes with a known role in zinc transport were identified.  Candidate genes of interest, including dehydrin and ZIP genes were mapped to a P. vulgaris consensus map.
