393 Phosphorus Fate In Long-Term Fertilized/Manured Soils

Oral Session
S11 Soils & Environmental Quality Phosphorus (P) from livestock manure and inorganic fertilizer can react with soil components following two distinct patterns, an initial rapid reaction that takes a few days or weeks followed by a much slower reaction that takes up to few years or decades. It is the slow processes as well as their interactions with P-addition practices that regulate soil P forms associating with bioavailability and impacts on water quality through losses, due to build-up from long-term applications with low use efficiency. A range of issues relating to P in long-term fertilized/manured soils will be discussed in this session, including 1) behaviours of P determined using chemical and/or instrumental approaches, such as XANES and NMR; 2) trend and transformation pathway; 3) bioavailability and agronomic values of residual P in soil; and 4) P losses and their pathways from soil to water.
