Studies were conducted to determine if narrow rows and/or greater plant densities would hasten crop development. Three hybrids were arranged as main plots in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Spilt plots were row widths of 76 cm, 38 cm or twin rows (56 and 20 cm) and split-split plots were plant density (75000, 87500, 100000, 112500 plants ha-1). Sites were established at Elizabethtown and Lexington, Kentucky. In season measuerments included plant height at anthesis, days to anthesis, duration of anthesis and pollination, light interception at V8 and R1 and light interception on the ear leaf at R3.
