As a leader in the early 1990’s in developing soil quality indicators and using them in cropping system comparisons, John Doran was a mentor and inspiration to many in our field.  His leadership in NCR-59 reshaped its direction and resulted in a number of noteworthy publications and symposia.  This presentation will summarize findings from my own and others’ research comparing soil quality in organic versus conventional cropping systems.
