Fungal anthracnose (Colletotrichum spp.) has been noted as a severe disease problem in Texas seed production fields of lablab bean (Lablab purpureus [L.] Sweet). Forty-nine lablab bean breeding lines were planted near Andrews, TX in July 2010 and rated for anthracnose disease severity on a scale of 0 to 9, where 0 = no disease and 9 = severe. The lines were rated on Oct. 13, 2010. Thirty-four percent of the lablab bean lines evaluated in 2010 were rated as anthracnose resistant (score = 0 or 1; no apparent infection or a few small necrotic lesions) and sixteen percent of the lines were highly anthracnose susceptible (score = 8 or 9; large necrotic lesions or plant death). Eight lablab bean breeding lines were identified with both anthracnose resistance and good seed production traits.
