The Global research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases was proposed by New Zealand at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) in Copenhagen in 2009 and developed in partnership with the United States. This alliance now includes 32 member countries and its charter is anticipated to be approved in June 2011. The major functions of this alliance are to 1) Understand GHG emissions from agriculture, 2) Improve measurement and estimation of GHG emissions and C sequestration, 3) Develop ways to reduce emissions, 4) Develop ways to increase C sequestration, 5) Mitigate GHGs while sustaining or enhancing productivity and resilience as climate changes, 6) Transfer new knowledge and technology to farmers/land managers worldwide, and 7) Build scientific capacity in developing countries via partnerships. The current structure includes 3 Research Groups: Livestock, Crops, and Paddy Rice; and a Cross-cut group that will initially focus on carbon and nitrogen cycling in soils. This poster will present some initial activities and proposed projects of these groups.
