To aid educators and industry workers with sand size classification, the University of Wisconsin- River Falls Crops and Soils Club developed a way to produce sand cards, which provide a visual sample of the different sand size classes recognized by the USDA.  When orders arrive, club members sieve and separate pre-collected bulk sand samples into various sizes using mechanical sieving. Next, members glue the appropriate sand samples onto special cards that fit into 3-ring Munsell color books.  Upon request, students travel to local schools to assist high school soil judging teams and to show them how to use the sand cards.  We distribute about 100 sand cards annually, many of which accompany soil textural class kits, which we also market and sell.
