The Virginia Agricultural Land Use Agronomic Evaluation System (VALUES) is a field verified database of soil series found in Virginia classed according to their potential agricultural productivity. Joining VALUES with SSURGO creates a spatially distributed database of land productivity. There are several high resolution remote sensing products from which we can accurately depict the extent of Virginia's farmland. A comparison of farmland and soil productivity over select Virginia counties shows that farmland is not randomly distributed but takes place on land that has above average agricultural productivity potential.
