Session Description: Sensor-based water management, once a pie-in-the-sky concept, is rapidly gaining acceptance in urban and agricultural settings. An example is the joint effort by EPA and the Irrigation Association to roll out Smart Water Application Technologies (SWAT) for urban irrigation systems. Its rapid progress is enabled by the fact that nearly all urban, and now the majority of agricultural, irrigated lands are served by pressurized systems. Cutting edge research is enabling this rapid invention and adoption of sensor-based water management; and it is the purpose of this symposium to examine new work in the fields of sensor development and testing, wireless sensor network design, fundamental soil-plant-atmosphere continuum science of sensed atmospheric, plant and soil property dynamics, algorithms for interpreting sensed data to determine evaporative demand, plant water needs and soil water deficits, and irrigation system integration.
