Session Description: Climate change has the potential to alter the prevalence and severity of extreme weather events such as heat waves, cold waves, floods and droughts. These types of events can have an equal - or greater - impact on natural and managed ecosystems than the more gradual change in means that are typically associated with climate change. Papers are invited that explore the frontiers of our understanding of extreme events and their consequences for above and belowground C and nutrient cycling, as well as potential feedback mechanisms from the biosphere to the climate system from theoretical, observational, experimental, and/or modeling perspectives.
