Abstract:
To increase awareness of agronomy, the Wheat State Agronomy Club (WSAC) had the opportunity of partnering with several agricultural businesses and organizations within Kansas to inform youth about agronomy. The WSAC provided outreach with: Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom, Saline County Farm Bureau, Lyon County Farm Bureau, Collegiate Farm Bureau, Kansas Boy Scouts, Kansas State University Department of Agronomy, and Kansas State University College of Agriculture. Through these activities the WSAC helped promote agronomy and inform our future generations about agronomy, crop science and soil science, and how they affect our everyday lives. Over the 2012-2013 school year, 30 members helped promote agronomy at multiple events. The WSAC helped with three different “Agronomy in the Classroom” presentations, two K-State Kids Field Days, and helped at the K-State Boy Scout Merit Badge Conference (Plant Science Session), the K-State Open House, the College of Agriculture Kiddie Barnyard and the State FFA Career Development Events. Through this wide variety of events all promoting agronomy and educating the future generations, the WSAC members were able to help advance a positive message about agronomy and encourage them to consider a career in our profession.
