Abstract:
Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) that rely on soil hydrologic processes are reliant on a comprehensive understanding of related soil. Without this data, stormwater control measures have failed or given  or poor performance due to faulty designs.  Soil function in stormwater control is largely a factor soil ecosystem functions and ecosystem services and in many cases, reconstruction or maintenance of soils can facilitate infiltration as well as filtering pollutants from runoff.  These processes rely on plant-soil interactions, and soil biota for their role in nutrient cycling, the development of soil structure, and promoting deep drainage.   This presentation reviews how soils have been been used for stormwater management in the past several years, and its role in the design and functioning of stormwater control measures, and which elevates the consideration of soil as a vital component of runoff capture and its management.
