Abstract:
Wheat production in the United States comprises approximately 12 million acres of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) and 41 million acres of winter wheat annually. These wheat acres are subjected to autumn and early spring rainfall that can leach nitrogen out of the wheat root zone and also lead to denitrification losses as nitrous oxides, ultimately leading to reductions in yield potential. In 2012 Dow AgroSciences established trials to evaluate the agronomic and yield benefits of Instinct®, a nitrapyrin CS formulation, throughout the key wheat growing regions of the northern US. In these trials, Instinct was evaluated in combination with various nitrogen rates, production practices and fertilizer sources. The results from these trials demonstrated that Instinct had a positive impact on wheat yield without any negative effects on protein content. Instinct was also shown to increase the amount and duration of NH4+ retention in the root zone as compared to the non-stabilized fertilizer treatments.
