Research By Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada On Contaminants of Emerging Concern Associated With Land Application of Municipal Biosolids.

Long term research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada on land application of municipal biosolids has resulted in a suite of research studies that have focused specifically on the fate and transport of contaminants of emerging concern at field and plot scales.  These contaminants include pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and perfluorinated compounds.  Emphasis has been placed on: i. evaluating different land application practices in the context of reducing off-field transport of these contaminants to surface and ground water receptors, ii. the persistence of drugs in soil/water environments, and iii. modeling transport and fate of PPCPs in soil as affected by land application approach and soil macroporosity.  This talk will overview general research findings to date.
