This talk will review the need for soil information at a global extent particularly for biophysical modelling. This is largely to tackle issues of food,  water and energy security and climate-change adaptation. The GlobalSoilMap effort is explained in detail. A methodology to go from GlobalSoilMap products to a wider range of soil properties suitable for biophysical land-surface modelling via soil inference systems will be described.
