Session Description: Measuring the variability of soil properties in space and time is critical to improving our models and management of agricultural and natural landscapes. From crop breeding to site-specific management and net ecosystem exchange, all aboveground processes are tightly linked to below-ground conditions. However, successfully quantifying these systems is often extremely difficult. There is considerable work being done that creatively applies sensors and instrumentation to resolve these challenges using novel and innovative techniques. This session aims to highlight these efforts and enhance our understanding of what is being done now, and what could be done in the future to advance measurement tools and provide critical knowledge.
