Title: Symposium--Effects of Nutrient Cycling in Urban Grassland Soils on Soil and Water Quality

Session Description: Nutrient addition (as inorganic fertilizers and organic by-products) to urban landscapes, especially turfgrass, is often implicated in urban water quality degradation. There has been a considerable amount of research in recent years to quantify turfgrass nutrient use efficiency, N and P losses from urban grassed landscapes, improved urban nutrient management practices, and development and promotion of more efficient turfgrass varieties to reduce nutrient losses. In addition, urban grasslands can have climate change implications due to potential storage of C and N2O emissions from N fertilizer. The purpose of this session is to provide a state of the science on nutrient cycling in urban grasslands and how these influence environmental quality.
