Session Description: Rare earth elements (e.g. neodymium) and other specialty metals (e.g. lithium, indium) as well as metal-bearing nanoparticles such as cerium oxide, nanosilver, titanium dioxide, and zero-valent iron are increasingly utilized and produced by industrial and associated activities. Hence, biogeochemical processes controlling the cycling of these metals released to natural systems are important, yet are often poorly understood. We therefore welcome contributions that examine emerging metal contaminants in soils, sediments and natural waters, and explore operative biogeochemical pathways of retention, mobilization and transformation. Metals of interest include (but are not limited to) rare earths, specialty metals, and metal-bearing nanoparticles.
