Big Data in Ag: Definitions and Implications.

The use of the term “Big Data” is widespread and sometimes perceived as a commercial buzzword. Although the hype around this concept is coming down, the facts and vision behind this concept are creating a real revolution that will impact several spheres of Society. This presentation aims at demystifying what “Big Data” is and how it relates to the Ag activities. We'll begin by introducing the Big Data concept, its origins, its current situation and examples. Then, we'll discuss key definitions and the fundamental characteristics of Big Data, including an overview of its technological ecosystem. We'll cover the core technology specifically designed for handling Big Data and discuss how traditional technologies are being augmented to support the requirements of Big Data. The key role of geospatial data and related technology for Ag will follow. Challenges related to spatially-aware Big Data, to privacy, to the adoption of a new paradigm, and to the workforce will be examined as well as the new opportunities we can benefit from. We'll then conclude with brief summary and closing remarks.
